Isabel Su ’23

In a match that came down to #1 singles to decide things, Mercersburg newcomer Hisano Enomoto ’25 knocked off Hill’s Romina Villarreal in straight sets to clinch the season opening match for the Blue Storm, 4-3. The contest between the two Mid-Atlantic Prep League rivals took place at the Smoyer Tennis Center in Mercersburg.

Mercersburg (1-0) swept all three doubles matches to notch the doubles point and take an early 1-0 lead. The #1 team of Enomoto and Isabel Su ’23, the #2 team of Izzy Jones ’22 and Sam Jacobs ’23, and the #3 team of Camille Smith ’22 and MC Miro ’23 all cruised to victory, playing solid team doubles along the way and looking increasingly comfortable at net.

The matchups in singles appeared from the start to be more favorable to Hill; and indeed the first two singles matches to come off court were Hill victories at #3 and #5 singles, giving the Blues a 2-1 edge.

A convincing 6-1, 6-0 win by the Blue Storm’s Dayoung Kim ’23 at #4 evened up the team score at 2-2. When Jones came through at #6 singles and Hill prevailed at #2, all eyes turned to the #1 singles match where Enomoto, who had already taken the first set, was in a battle with Villarreal (who is also a ninth grader).

With both teams and a growing number of spectators looking on, the young stars sparkled. In a set that featured multiple 20-shot rallies and moments of brilliance from both players, Enomoto (of Tokyo) ultimately came out on top, winning her first singles match as a Mercersburg player and earning the decisive point in the team competition, a 4-3 Mercersburg instant classic.

Mercersburg will try to stay perfect on the season when it hosts the Jefferson Juniors from West Virginia Tuesday, September 14, at 4:30 p.m.
