Girls’ V Tennis Beats Hill in Opener
In its first official match of the 2019 season, Mercersburg’s girls’ varsity tennis team outlasted Mid-Atlantic Prep League rival The Hill School, 4-3, September 14 in Pottstown, Pa.
It came down to the final singles match of the day between the Blue Storm (1-0) and Blues, which Mercersburg’s Greta Goetzenberger ’22 captured for the Storm to give “new” head coach Eric Hicks (who has coached the Mercersburg boys’ squad for a quarter-century) his first victory as a girls’ head coach.

“Hill got off to a slower start in doubles than we did, but rallied and overtook us at #1 and #2 to clinch the doubles point,” Hicks said. “Overall, the doubles was fun to watch because McGrory and Sandhu made some terrific volleys and played good defense.
“Fortunately, steady play from Su, Kranich, and Goetzenberger got us the singles wins we needed. With things tied 3-3, Greta played four steady points to close out the match for us. We’ve improved since the start of the season and we still have much more work to do.”
Mercersburg visits Garrison Forest School Tuesday, September 17, for a 4:30 p.m. match in Owings Mills, Md.
