Girls’ V Squash Places 3rd at MASO Tourney

Saturday, February 5, 2022

Mercersburg hosted the five-team 2022 Mid-Atlantic Squash Organization Championship February 5. The Blue Storm welcomed Episcopal High School, National Cathedral School, Potomac School, and Saint Catherine’s School to the Davenport Squash Center.

Mercersburg defeated Episcopal before falling to St. Catherine’s to place third. Potomac won the tournament.

Indira Moshi ’24 and Martina Vega Calero ’23 continued their winning ways, each winning twice in convincing fashion to push their twin unbeaten records to 9-0 on the season. Equally impressive was the performance of Camille Smith ’22, who overcame early deficits in both of her matches, but walked away triumphant in each, in five sets. “I think she would agree that her win over her opponent from Saint Catherine’s was the best match of her Mercersburg career,” said Blue Storm head coach Mike Sweeney.

Other wins on the day came from Greta Lawler ’23 at #3 over Episcopal and Sam Gerstel ’22 at #8 vs. Episcopal. Day Kim ’23 goes down in the record books with a win at #9 over Episcopal by default.

“Today was another step forward for our team,” Sweeney said. “We managed to improve on results from earlier in the season, beating Episcopal 6-3 (rather than 5-4 back in early January) and slightly closed the gap on mighty Saint Catherine’s losing 6-3 (rather than 7-2 back in December). There is still much work to be done, but this team continues to make progress.”
