Girls’ V Soccer Blanks McConnellsburg
Mercersburg’s girls’ varsity soccer team got goals from Cate Vickery ’22, Susan Concordia ’22, and Kyla Moore ’24 en route to a 5–0 shutout of visiting McConnellsburg September 14 on Upper Field.
Caroline Simpson ’22 and Grace Carter ’23 made one save apiece to combine for a shutout in goal.
Vickery opened the scoring for the Blue Storm in the 25th minute off an assist from Maddie Goodhart ’24 when she gathered the pass and beat the McConnellsburg keeper at close range. Six minutes later, a cross off the foot of Caroline Wilkinson ’23 caromed off the foot of a Spartan defender into the net for an own goal and a 2–0 Mercersburg lead at halftime.
Concordia scored the first of her two goals in the 44th minute when Nora Smith ’23 played a ball forward and Concordia laced a shot into the upper-right corner of the net. Moore’s first goal as a member of the Blue Storm followed in the 53rd minute, and Concordia chipped in the game’s final goal from about 30 yards out in the 75th minute.
“We had a great match today,” Mercersburg head coach Kristen Pixler said. “The team adjusted well to working with a new formation that allowed a strong attack. The players showed commitment and endurance playing through heat and humidity. Maddie and Nora had some wonderful assists from the midfield, and Caroline [Wilkinson] distributed the ball well, showing true grit and unselfish team play. Paloma Tellez ’22 had a standout performance in the back, showing an incredible read of the game and determination on defense. As always, I hope we can take what we learned today and apply it to our future competitions.”
The Blue Storm (1–1) opens Mid-Atlantic Prep League play Saturday, September 18, when it ventures on the road for the first time for a contest at the Hun School of Princeton. Kickoff in Princeton, NJ, is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
