Mercersburg’s girls’ varsity basketball team picked up a much-needed 33-32 win January 14 over host Holton-Arms School in Bethesda, MD. The Blue Storm withstood a furious fourth-quarter rally by the homestanding Panthers to pick up its seventh win of the season.

The Storm found itself in an early 6-0 hole before a combination of changing defenses and outstanding rebounding helped halt the Panthers’ offense. Camryn Yeager ’21 came off the bench to score of four of her six points in the first quarter. Tough defense continued into the second quarter, leading to a 17-10 Mercersburg halftime edge.

A third-quarter hot streak helped the Storm build what was a comfortable lead before Holton-Arms managed to inch its way back. The Panthers scored nine straight points to pull within one point late in the fourth quarter. From that point, the teams traded baskets and Mercersburg came out on top thanks to stellar game management, including a clutch time-out called by Rachel Hull ’23.

Ava Hull ’21 scored a team-high eight points, Natalie Titus ’20 added seven points, and Yeager provided four steals and nine rebounds in addition to her six points.

Mercersburg (7-5 overall) stays on the road for a game Friday, January 17, at Springdale Prep. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. in New Windsor, Maryland.
