Girls’ V Basketball Drives Past Oakcrest
Mercersburg’s girls’ varsity basketball team got 17 points from Zoe Gooch ’20 and 15 points from Ava Hull ’22 in a 63-46 win over Oakcrest School December 7 in the consolation game of the Potomac Tip-Off in McLean, VA.
The Blue Storm (2-1) dominated the opening minutes, jumping out on top 10-1 before the Chargers made a furious comeback to tie the game at 12-12 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Hull had six points and Natalie Titus ’20 and Rachael Hull ’23 combined for nine points off the bench.
Mercersburg broke things open in the third quarter with an eight-point outburst from Ava Hull and some outstanding passing from point guard Cate Vickery ’22, who had seven assists in the third quarter. Oakcrest cut a 17-point deficit down to nine points in the fourth quarter before the Storm pulled away for a 20-point win.
“I was very impressed with how the team responded to the runs Oakcrest made,” Mercersburg head coach Paul Sipes said. “This team has a different mental makeup then the teams we’ve had in the last couple of years, and I am excited because I will believe we will only continue to grow and improve.”
Gooch was named to the All-Tournament team. Titus joined Gooch and Ava Hull in double figures with 10 points.
The Storm returns to action Tuesday, December 10, with a road contest at Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart. Tip-off is at 6 p.m. in Bethesda, Md.
