Girls’ Cross Country Takes on Blair, Hill in Virtual Race
In a creative way to compete against other schools in the strange athletic season that is fall 2020, Mercersburg’s girls’ cross country team joined Mid-Atlantic Prep League foes Blair Academy and The Hill School in a virtual race. Runners from each of the three schools tested themselves on their individual regulation campus courses. (All are 5,000 meters in length.)
Addie Geitner ’21 was Mercersburg’s top finisher, posting a time of 22:53 for third place overall. Had the race been held in person, she would have held off Hill’s Mary Kate Barnhart (23:56) in a thrilling sprint to the finish. Hill took four of the first five places, led by Colette Zidek (21:33).
Anna Deavers ’21 was the second Mercersburg runner to cross the finish, taking 12th place in a time of 24:39. Monique Garcia ’22 (25:15) and Lois Hargrove ’21 (25:31) were 15th and 16th, respectively, followed by Clara Getty ’21 (26:04, 19th).
Other Mercersburg finishers included Elsa Yelk ’21 (26:20, 21st), Maddie Schermerhorn ’22 (26:45, 22nd), Elizabeth Flaherty ’21 (27:45, 25th), Erika Sowah ’24 (27:51, 26th), Linley Hill ’23 (28:07, 27th), Paula Luruena Marquez ’23 (28:40, 28th), and Leah Willis ’24 (29:21, 29th).
In the virtual team standings (in which each team’s top five finishers accumulate points, and the lowest team score wins), Hill finished first with 21 points, Blair was second with 46 points, and Mercersburg took third with 65 points.
The Blue Storm will hold a Blue/White intrasquad race Thursday, October 29.
