Mercersburg Academy seniors Maddy Gillner ’22 of Rector, PA, and Eric Liu ’22 of Hagerstown, MD, have been chosen as semifinalists in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Competition, a significant achievement awarded to just 16,000 high-school students nationwide.

The Semifinalists were named in the 67th annual National Merit Scholarship Program, and will have an opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $30 million that will be offered next spring.

To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 95 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and approximately half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the title of “Merit Scholar.”

Additionally, two members of Mercersburg Academy’s Class of 2022 were named Commended Students in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program: Zain Qureshi ’22 of Enola, PA, and Josh Terris ’22 of Annandale, VA.

Honorees make up a group of more than two-thirds (about 34,000) of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT, and receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise. Commended Students are named based on a nationally applied Selection Index score that may vary from year to year and is typically below the level required for participants to be named Semifinalists in their respective states. Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, some of these students do become candidates for special scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses.
