Football Runs Over Valley Forge
Mercersburg’s football team scored 22 first-quarter points en route to a 30-8 victory over Valley Forge Military Academy in the Blue Storm’s first road contest of the season September 28 in Wayne, Pa.
Head coach Andy Brown set the stage for a three-week road swing though the Keystone State Football League when he characterized the team’s travel as a “business trip, with jobs to do and work to get done.” The Storm was all business in the first quarter, as Jackson Schemerhorn ’21 scored from 5 yards out on Mercersburg’s first drive and quarterback Campbell Prentiss ’20 swept in for the two-point conversion.
Mercersburg's other scores came via the air as Prentiss connected with Jack Yeager ’20, Jack LaBolle ’22, and Aiden Nelson ’23 for three separate touchdowns. The toss to LaBolle was a nifty catch-and-run for 60 yards.
Mercersburg’s defense pitched a shutout until late in the fourth quarter, when VFMA capitalized on a fumbled punt return for its only score of the game. Nose guard Adam Rappaport ’21 and his defensive-line mates dominated up front, notching several tackles for lost yardage. Meanwhile, VFMA struggled to complete passes through most of the first three stanzas.
Mercersburg (2-1) travels to Perkiomen (3-0) Friday, October 4, in a showdown for first place in the KSFL.
