Football Notches Win No. 5 at Delco Christian
Mercersburg’s football team posted its highest point total under second-year head coach Andy Brown in a 52–30 victory on the road over Delaware County Christian School October 16 in Newtown Square, PA.
After falling behind for the first time this season, the Blue Storm (5–0) ran off 44 straight points in its first road contest of the year. The 52 points is also the most points scored on the gridiron by a Mercersburg squad in more than two decades.
The host Knights got on the scoreboard first when Jay DeMateo hit Titus Myers on a 30-yard pass play to put Delco Christian up 6-0 less than three minutes into the first quarter. Mercersburg responded when Caleb Newcomer ’23 scampered over from three yards out after a hard-charging 35-yard ramble by Louis Concordia ’22. Newcomer took another toss sweep into the end zone for the two-point conversion and the visitors had a lead they would not relinquish.
Newcomer scored another touchdown on a 20-yard rush around end and again added the two-point conversion. Mercersburg led 26–6 at the half, as the Storm defense forced a safety, then quarterback Luke Golumbic ’23 carried three times on four plays, capping the short drive by bulling in from three yards out.
The Blue Storm quickly moved to a 32–6 advantage on its first possession, as Golumbic raced over from 20 yards out and helped his own cause by handling the conversion.
Adrian Rios ’25 scored his first varsity touchdown in the second half.
“We overcame several obstacles today and got ourselves untracked,” Brown said. “We handled the weather elements and our kids played very well despite the adversity.”
Mercersburg visits Perkiomen School (4–1) Friday, October 22, in the Keystone State Football League regular-season finale, with the winner claiming home field advantage through the playoffs. Perkiomen’s only loss of the season was a 38–24 setback to the Blue Storm on October 2 in Mercersburg.
