Football Beats Valley Forge, Secures Playoff Home Game
Senior quarterback Campbell Prentiss ’20 used his legs more than his arm in leading Mercersburg’s football team to an impressive 42-12 victory over Valley Forge Military Academy October 19 on Family & Alumni Weekend.
Prentiss, who entered the contest with the second-most touchdown passes (11) in the area, tallied three scores on the ground for the Blue Storm, all on short runs (5 yards, 5 yards, 6 yards) that capped several sustained drives by the hosts.
Dive back Jasper Dittmar ’21 also scored twice, rambling in from 20 yards out and slicing through the line for a 6-yard score. He finished with 16 carries for 100 yards.
Mercersburg’s defense enjoyed a strong day, highlighted by a pick-six interception by Stephen Rice ’21, who stepped in front of a VFMA receiver, grabbed the pass, and raced 50 yards into the end zone. Damien Mahanama ’20 then intercepted another Valley Forge pass on the Cadets’ next play from scrimmage.
“We played Mercersburg football today,” Mercersburg head coach Andy Brown said. “We’ve been talking about it all week, getting back to what we need to do.
“I’m so thankful to these seniors for what they've done for our program. In a time of uncertainty—moving to the 8-man game, a new head coach coming in, questions of how many players we’d have—they showed true leadership in committing to the season and sticking it out. It’s a great group.”
Mercersburg (4-2) secured its first winning season since 2007 with the victory. The Storm hosts Delco Christian (3-3) in the semifinals of the KSFL playoffs on Friday, October 25. Check back for the kickoff time and location.
