Fall Dance Concert to Take Place November 9
Mercersburg Academy’s Dance Program will host its Fall Concert on Saturday, November 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Burgin Center for the Arts’ Simon Theatre. Admission is free, and tickets are not required.
The concert will feature a variety of works—from ballet to hip-hop, tap, contemporary, and jazz.
“There’s something for everyone,” said Denise Dalton, director of dance and arts faculty at Mercersburg.
One of the pieces Dalton choreographed, “Works of Mercy,” is set to Albinoni’s “Adagio in G Minor.” The piece was inspired while Dalton visited Haywood Street Church in Asheville, N.C., this summer. She learned the church commissioned a local artist, Christopher Holt, to portray Haywood Street Church’s vision of community through a large scale work of art in the medium of fresco, to cover the entire central wall of the sanctuary.
The project features faces and scenes from their urban ministry and challenges viewers to embrace the beauty within the outcast, to see neighbors living in poverty with fresh eyes, and perhaps can help stir a new passion for justice, according to Haywood Street Church’s website.
In addition to Dalton, choreographers for the show include Jennifer Nelson ’13 and part-time instructors Mary Robare, Nancy Cogan-Hershberger, Sean Alan Miller, and Michael Reyes.
A number of student-choreographed pieces are also on the bill. Student choreographers include Shannon Fan ’20, Riley Wick ’20, Ceara Weiss ’20, Maddie Dawson ’21, Rose Potter ’21, Sarah Noorbakhsh ’21 and Joie Xiao ’22.
The weekend following the Fall Dance Concert, the Simon Theatre will host Mercersburg’s Fall Pops Concert (featuring the Jazz Band, Octet, and Magalia) Saturday, November 16, at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.
