Argyle Downes ’23

Mercersburg’s varsity golf team exploded out of the gate with a solid victory over visiting St. James School September 15 in a nine-hole match at Chambersburg Country Club. Led by a scorching even-par 36 fired by Argyle Downes ’23, the Blue Storm topped the Saints by a total of 80 strokes (155 to 235).

The Storm’s team score was just three strokes shy of the school record for a nine-hole competition.

Along with Downes’ 36, Kenneth Yonke ’22 shot 39, and Jason Jones ’24 and Nick Barnes ’22 carded identical scores of 40. The top four scores from each team count, and the Storm’s team performance was so strong that neither Ethan Xin ’23 nor newcomer Josh Pethel ’22 (who both shot 41) figured into the scoring.

Downes posted nine consecutive pars while hitting eight greens in regulation during his round.

Danny McElroy carded the low round of the afternoon for St. James (52).

“This was a complete team effort from top to bottom,” said Mercersburg head coach Doug Smith. “I am thrilled to be able to not count two 41s in our opening match of the year. There is a long way to go, but this team has real potential.”

Mercersburg’s next match is Saturday, September 18, at Chambersburg Country Club against Potomac School (McLean, VA). The match tees off at noon.
