Mercersburg is excited to recognize 14 members of its Class of 2022 for being elected to membership in the Academy’s chapter of the Cum Laude Society, which recognizes excellence in academic work and is billed as the secondary-school equivalent of Phi Beta Kappa.

A second group of new members from the senior class will be announced in spring 2022 at the school’s Cum Laude Convocation, when the entire group will be inducted into the chapter.

Members of the Class of 2022 chosen as new members are Carina Cole ’22 of Boiling Springs, PA; Michelle Feng ’22 of Beijing, China; Maddy Gilner ’22 of Rector, PA; Terrance Ji ’22 of Shanghai, China; Kyle Kim ’22 of Fullerton, CA; Eric Liu ’22 of Hagerstown, MD; Khoa Nguyen ’22 of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; Linh Nguyen ’22 of Hanoi, Vietnam; Folake Okunsanya ’22 of Lagos, Nigeria; Amanda Peh ’22 of Singapore; Ben Rihn ’22 of Stahlstown, PA; Emma Shuford ’22 of Hickory, NC; Amy Wu ’22 of Cypress, TX; and John Xu ’22 of Shanghai, China.

“The motto of Cum Laude is ‘Arete, Dike, Time’—which translates to ‘excellence, justice, and honor’—and these students model for our school the very highest level of achievement in our classrooms,” says Julia Stojak Maurer ’90, associate head of school for school life.

Mercersburg is one of 382 secondary schools nationwide with a Cum Laude chapter; honorees are elected to membership by faculty who themselves are Cum Laude members. Those chosen for membership in the Academy’s chapter represent the highest level of academic achievement within the school.
