Colwell Lowers School Record at State Indoor T&F Championships
James Colwell ’20 lowered his own school record in the 60m hurdles and advanced to the semifinals of the event at the 2020 Pennsylvania Track & Field Coaches Association (PTFCA) Indoor State Track & Field Championships, which were held March 1 at Penn State University’s Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track in State College, PA.
Colwell ran his preliminary heat in 8.53 seconds, which bettered his own school mark of 8.63 seconds set earlier this season. He finished 15th in the semifinal round by running an 8.58.
Colwell, of Iola, TX, holds Mercersburg’s indoor school records in the 55m hurdles and as one-quarter of the 4x400m relay, in addition to the 60m hurdles record. He is the 2020 Mid-Atlantic Prep League and Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association champion in the 55m hurdles, having lowered his own school record (7.90 seconds) in the event at the 2020 MAPL Championships February 15 in Lawrenceville, NJ.
He was one of just 24 athletes from across the state to qualify in the 60m hurdles, and was the first male hurdler in school history to compete at the meet, which brings together the top public-and private-school athletes from across Pennsylvania. Tatiana Purnell ’15 qualified in the girls’ 60m hurdles in both 2014 and 2015.
Colwell helped set the school record in the 4x400m relay (3:39.86, along with teammates Jasper Dittmar ’21, Sean Fiscus ’21, and Berklee Cohen ’20) at the MAPL Championships. He also ranks in the top 10 in Mercersburg indoor history in the 300m (41.04, ninth), pole vault (8’ 3”, ninth), and long jump (19’ 5”, 10th).
Colwell was the first Mercersburg athlete to qualify for the PTFCA Indoor Championships since 2018, when Mikale Williams ’18 (boys’ triple jump) and Sophia Divone ’19 (girls’ mile run) both competed.
