Residential Life

What to Bring

While you may be assigned your living space, how you personalize it is up to you. This list of dorm do’s and don’ts will help you create the best possible home away from home.

Bring these things for your room:
  • a pillow, a bedspread, and a washable mattress protector
  • two sets of towels and twin-sized bed linens (one for washing, one for using)
  • a laundry bag
  • a desk lamp with compact fluorescent bulb (no halogen lamps, please)
  • a wastepaper basket
  • a closed container and utensils for any food you might keep in your room
All students are expected to arrive at Mercersburg with an iPad (4th Generation or newer version) and be fully up to date with the latest iOS. Read more information about iPad specifications and requirements.

Bring these things for your classes (everything listed below may be purchased at the School Store):
  • school supplies: pencils (#2 mechanical or #2 wood), pens, erasers, looseleaf paper, a 3-ring
binder or two, a couple of pocket folders, a ruler with metric markings.
  • TI-84 calculator: the Mathematics department requires that students enrolled in any level of
Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Precalculus, Calculus, Statistics, or post-AP offerings have a
    calculator from the TI-84 family.
The recommended models, from most desirable to least, are: TI-84 Plus CE, TI-84 Plus C Silver
Edition, TI-84 Plus Silver Edition, TI-84 Plus, TI-84.
  • a backpack, messenger bag, or book bag to carry books and your iPad between classes. We
recommend book bags that are designed to be exposed to the elements (rain, snow, sun).
Leave at home:
  • bed, mattress, desk, and dressers (though they may not necessarily be your style, we’ve got these basics covered)
  • halogen lamps
  • cooking appliances or refrigerators, unless you’re a prefect or peer group leader
  • television sets or DVD players
  • pets
Consider bringing:
  • a soft or upholstered chair or sofa no larger than 54"x75" (except for ninth graders—who must wait until after the fall term, if approved)
  • a small table for your computer if you’re bringing one
  • a computer printer
  • window curtains (blinds or shades are provided)
  • one large (9’ x 12’) or two medium-size rugs for your room
  • a stereo or other sound equipment
Some helpful hints:
  • Returning students who already know their roommate should coordinate larger room items (new students will find out their roommate selection at registration).
  • Check the residential section of the Blue Book before decorating rooms.
  • Washers and dryers are available in every dorm, but consider using the Academy’s laundry service (which is available through the school post office) as a way to save time
  • Students are permitted to ship personal items to the school prior to arrival (and you can always send things once they arrive at a later date; packages may be picked up at the time of registration. Simply address the package as follows:
