Harking back to founding headmaster Dr. William Mann Irvine building a power plant in the school’s early days, Mercersburg has long tackled creative on-campus solutions for environmental stewardship and economic stability. More recently, representatives from all ends of the Mercersburg community spectrum developed an Environmental Master Plan (EMP), which continues to undergo periodic assessment and revision. Mercersburg has implemented any number of initiatives, of which we have highlighted a select few. All of these efforts serve to help elevate understanding and responsible action within the Mercersburg Academy community (and beyond—when faculty and staff return home at night, students go home for breaks, and graduates carry their practices off to universities and colleges around the world).
If you have any questions, please contact Will Willis, director of environmental initiatives.
Environmental Master Plan
With the help of consultant Wynn Calder, Mercersburg drew on the input and collaboration of Board of Regents members, administrators, faculty, staff, students, parents, and alumni to create the first iteration of the Environmental Master Plan. Divided into multiple categories, it seeks to guide environmental efforts on all levels: facilities, curriculum, student engagement, and community outreach.
Founded in 1893 in the heart of Pennsylvania and the Mid-Atlantic, Mercersburg is a private, coed, college preparatory boarding school with approximately 435 students (15 percent are day), grades 9-12 and postgraduate.
