Calvin Sun speaks during the Beauregard School Meeting.

Calvin Sun, a physician, activist, choreographer, and entrepreneur, was the featured speaker for the third annual Joseph Hilliard Beauregard ’18 Memorial Generosity of Spirit School Meeting, which took place Tuesday, February 15, in the Burgin Center for the Arts’ Simon Theatre. In addition to the lecture, Sun also met with students to discuss his travels and his journey to becoming a doctor.

Based in New York City, Sun is a clinical assistant professor and board-certified physician specializing in emergency medicine. He has worked at multiple underserved emergency departments and large scale events around the country, most notably during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sun is also the founder and CEO of the Monsoon Diaries, a blog-turned-travel community that has taken hundreds of readers to more than 190 countries in the past 10 years. Those destinations include such places as North Korea, Nauru, Greenland, and Antarctica. The Monsoon Diaries has since been featured on BBC News, ABC News, MSNBC, and TED, and in National Geographic and USA Today.

The Beauregard Memorial Generosity of Spirit School Meeting series honors the memory of Beauregard, who attended Mercersburg for three years and graduated with the Class of 2018. He passed away in October 2018 during his freshman year at Savannah College of Art and Design; the speaker series has been established in his memory and with an eye toward furthering an ongoing and powerful message of recognition, respect, and caring that were a part of Joe’s life.

Last year’s speakers for the series were then-students Maggie Betkowski ’21 and Lian Wang ’21. Psychologist, performer, and poet Dr. Michael “Mykee” Fowlin was the inaugural presenter in 2020.

Upcoming endowed speaker events at Mercersburg include the Class of ’69 Global Engagement Lecture Thursday, April 21 (entrepreneur and inventor Kavita Shukla) and the Jacobs Residency Lecture Monday, May 2 (author and consultant Daniel Lerner).
