AJ Gray ’20 drives for a layup

In its 2019-2020 Mid-Atlantic Prep League lid-lifter January 11 against the visiting Hun School of Princeton, Mercersburg's boys' varsity basketball team used a big third quarter to rally from an 11-point deficit and posted a stellar defensive effort in the fourth period to notch a 60-49 victory over the Raiders at home in the Plantz Courts.

Three seniors scored in double figures for the victorious Blue Storm: AJ Gray ’20 (19 points), Patrick Di Tullio ’20 (17 points), and Kaylen Oweh ’20 (16 points).

Mercersburg (8-4, 1-0 MAPL) led 12-5 before Hun went on a 12-0 run in the final three minutes of the first quarter to grab a 17-12 lead, and increased the margin to 30-19 at halftime.

In the third quarter, a recommitment on the defensive end, some timely three-pointers, and a pair of steals leading to thunderous dunks by Oweh culminated in Di Tullio's buzzer-beating three pointer to tie the score at 38-38 at the end of the third period.

Gray knocked down a three-pointer in the opening minute of the fourth quarter to give the Storm the lead for good, and Mercersburg's defense kept Hun off the board for the first five minutes of the final frame. By that point, it was too late, and Mercersburg coasted to an 11-point win.

"When we play with energy and effort, we are a very good team," Mercersburg head coach Sean Crocker said. "When we do not, we are not. We need to commit to that and then good things will happen for us!"

Mercersburg has a quick turnaround, with MAPL rival Lawrenceville heading into the Plantz Courts for a 2:30 p.m. game Sunday, January 12.
