Jake Evert ’20 on the podium at Easterns

Mercersburg’s boys took second and the Blue Storm girls earned a fifth-place finish at the Eastern Interscholastic Swimming and Diving Championships February 14-15. Swimming events were held at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, PA, with the diving events taking place at Germantown Academy in Fort Washington, PA. Easterns is widely considered the top prep swimming and diving meet in the nation.

The second-place finish for the Storm boys is their highest at Easterns since winning the event in 2010. (Mercersburg’s girls most recently won the Easterns team championship in 2016.) Jake Evert ’20 broke two school records: in the boys’ 100-yard freestyle (44.66) and 50-yard freestyle (20.19, as the lead-off leg of the 200 free relay).

The Storm boys (485.5 points) finished behind only Phillips Academy Andover (641 points). Mercersburg entered the second day of the two-day event in third place, but passed The Haverford School (which ended up third with 448 points) on the final night of competition. Episcopal Academy (433) took fourth. Following the Blue Storm, the highest Mid-Atlantic Prep League school in the final standings was The Hill School (244.5, 11th).

In the girls' standings, Mercersburg (396.5 points) also finished ahead of all other MAPL schools, with Peddie School in eighth (294 points). Episcopal Academy won the meet on the girls’ side (619), with William Penn Charter School second (557).

Mercersburg placed third in the combined standings (882 points), behind Andover (1059) and Episcopal Academy (1052). Germantown Academy was fourth (735.5).
