Mercersburg’s boys varsity squash team hit the road January 22 to participate in its first Mid-Atlantic Squash Organization Invitational in two years. The MASO is a long running event featuring six mid-Atlantic teams. The Blue Storm defeated Woodberry Forest (VA) 5-4 in a semifinal before falling by the same score in the championship match to St. Christopher’s (Richmond, VA).

In the opener, Mercersburg avenged a loss to Woodberry in the 2019 High School Nationals by taking the top five positions on the ladder.

Mercersburg 5, Woodberry Forest 4
#1 Huzaifa Ibrahim ’24 won 3-0
#2 Fawad Jan ’24 won 3-0
#3 Azian Subhani ’23 won 3-1
#4 Francis Betkowski ’23 won 3-2
#5 Dawson Hastings ’23 won 3-2
#6 Danny Adusei-Poku ’23 lost 3-1
#7 Daniel Zhong ’23 lost 3-1
#8 Evan Howley ’22 lost 3-1
#9 Gerrit Elliman ’22 lost 3-2

This placed the Storm in its first MASO final in some time, against defending champion (2019) St. Christopher’s. Once again, the top three slots were Mercersburg wins, but the talent and depth of St. Chris proved too deep through the middle and back of the ladder. That said, Danny Adusei-Poku clinched a fourth win for the Storm at the number 6 position in a scorcher.

St. Christopher’s 5, Mercersburg 4
#1 Ibrahim won 3-0
#2 Jan won 3-1
#3 Subhani won 3-1
#4 Betkowski lost 0-3
#5 Hastings lost 3-0
#6 Adusei-Poku won 3-2
#7 Zhong lost 3-0
#8 Howley lost 3-0
#9 Elliman lost 3-0

The Storm hosts a three-team matchup Saturday, January 29, against MAPL rivals Blair and Hill (1 p.m.) at the Davenport Squash Center.
