Boys’ V Squash Gets Past Wakefield
The boys’ varsity squash team delivered its first win of the 2019-2020 season when the Blue Storm edged Wakefield School, 5-4, December 11 in the Davenport Squash Center.
The Storm grabbed the victory with its own brand of grit and grace. In the first flight, Jesse Zhang ’20 recorded Mercersburg’s lone victory, which put the scoreline at 2-1 in favor of Wakefield. In the second flight, both Henry O’Brien ’20 and Francis Betkowski ’23 delivered wins, bringing knotting the score at 3-3. The stage was clearly set as the #7, #4, and #1 ladder positions to decide.
At #1, Alex Lorenzo ’20 turned in a steady performance against a highly skilled young Wakefield player. Things heated up on both the other courts, as Ali Nurkhaidarov ’20 and Dalton Fitzsimmons ’20 rode the roller coaster to end up at a fifth and final set (each leveled with their opponents at 2-2). Fitzsimmons’ match then went into overtime after the players reached 10-10. After trading wits and shots in equal measure, with match balls for both opponents, Fitzsimmons sealed the win for Mercersburg with a 17-15 victory.
“We look forward to more action at home this weekend as the boys host seven other teams for the annual Tom Flanagan Tournament!” said Mercersburg director of squash and head coach Ryan Tyree.
The Flanagan Tournament begins Friday, December 14, at 4 p.m. in the Davenport Squash Center, and continues Saturday, December 15, starting at 10 a.m.
