Boys’ V Soccer Advances in State Tourney
Mercersburg’s boys’ varsity soccer team rallied with a goal in the 79th minute of regulation to force extra time, and Luis Gomez ’21 converted the decisive penalty kick to lift the Blue Storm past visiting Malvern Prep, 3-2, in a thrilling first-round contest November 1 in the 2019 Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association State Tournament.
The fifth-seeded Storm won the penalty shootout, 4-3, and advances to face No. 4 seed Kiski Tuesday, November 5, in a quarterfinal match to be played on the Kiski campus in Saltsburg, Pa.
Trailing 1-0 in the first half, Mercersburg’s Will Morgan ’22 scored off a beautiful cross from Ken Akiyama ’23 to tie things up before the visiting Friars scored just before intermission to claim a 2-1 lead. The score remained the same until less than two minutes were left, when Andrew Forrester ’21 served a ball into the box that found the head of Mason Davis ’20 and beat the Malvern keeper for a 2-2 deadlock.
The teams played two scoreless extra-time periods before the shootout. Gomez approached the ball hoping to break a 3-3 tie, and crushed his shot into the upper-left corner of the net to send the Storm to the next round.
Before next week’s PAISAA quarterfinal, Mercersburg finishes the regular season and Mid-Atlantic Prep League play at home Sunday, November 3, against the Hun School of Princeton. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
