Boys’ V Lacrosse Drops Senior Day Contest
Mercersburg’s boys‘ varsity lacrosse team fell to Virginia Episcopal School, 11-2, May 8 on Senior Day at Regents’ Field. Jobe Hause ’22 and Frank Cantera ’23 scored the goals for the Blue Storm.
Hause’s goal came in the first quarter and was a tough shot in transition. Cantera took an assist from Stephen Rice ’21 with 9:00 left in the third quarter to score and pull Mercersburg within 5–2, but the visiting Fighting Bishops scored the final six goals of the game to pull away.
The Blue Storm got strong defensive performances from Clark Bayer ’22, Ian Cruikshank ’21, and Christian Jetter ’22, who played staunch individual defense. Goalie Luke Hendricks ’24, in his first year playing lacrosse, stood tall in goal, making several key stops throughout the game. Gordon Lee ’21 competed hard at the face-off dot and picked up tough ground balls.
Hause was selected by his teammates as the player of the game for his effort all over the field. He added several face-off wins and ground balls to his offensive stat line.
"The game also gave us the opportunity to celebrate the three seniors on the roster," Mercersburg head coach Tim Kerr said. "Ian, Gordon, and Stephen have been outstanding leaders on and off the field for us this year."
Both the girls’ and boys’ varsity lacrosse games May 8 were dedicated to raising awareness of Morgan’s Message, a nonprofit organization founded in memory of former Duke University women’s lacrosse player Morgan Rodgers which is dedicated to reducing the stigma of mental-health issues within the student-athlete community. Mercersburg students purchased T-shirts and stickers in support of Morgan’s Message; all proceeds will benefit the nonprofit.
