Boys’ V Basketball Wins PAISAA State Tourney Opener
Quintin Metcalf ’20 scored 20 points and Kaylen Oweh ’20 added 18 points to send Mercersburg’s boys’ varsity basketball team to the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association quarterfinals with a tough 64-58 win over visiting Friends’ Central School February 14 in the Plantz Courts of Nolde Gymnasium.
The Blue Storm (17-8), which is the tournament’s No. 5 seed, advances to face the host Perkiomen School Saturday, February 15, at 1 p.m. in Pennsburg, PA.
Mercersburg led 12-10 after the first quarter and 28-23 at halftime. The Storm built a 10-point lead in the third quarter, but the visiting Phoenix (of Wynnewood, PA) hung around and chipped away, tying the score at 55-55 midway through the fourth period.
Oweh drove to the basket, scored, and was fouled with 1:05 to play to push Mercersburg ahead 62-58. A stellar defensive effort on the other end led to a shot-clock violation, and following a quick ill-advised Storm shot attempt, Friends’ Central had a chance to get within one possession, but a deflection led to a backcourt violation to give the Storm the ball back. Chris Watson ’22 sank two free throws with 12.0 seconds left and Mercersburg moved on with a 64-58 win.
Jack Yeager ’20 added 10 points and 14 rebounds for Mercersburg.
The winner of Saturday’s Mercersburg/Perkiomen game advances to the tournament’s "final four," to be played Friday and Saturday, February 21-22, at Montgomery County Community College in Blue Bell, PA.
