Quintin Metcalf ’20 dunks in the Blue Storm’s win over St. Maria Goretti

Mercersburg’s boys’ varsity basketball team won its 2019-2020 home opener December 4: a 72-53 victory over local rival and previously unbeaten St. Maria Goretti in the Plantz Courts.

The Blue Storm got a team-high 20 points from Kaylen Oweh ’20 and 19 points from AJ Gray ’20. Quintin Metcalf ’20 contributed eight points and notched double figures in rebounds to lead the Storm

Mercersburg (1-3) led 44-21 at halftime; the Gaels (4-1) got within 12 points in the second half but could come no closer.

“We did what we do, and when we do that, we are very good,” Mercersburg head coach Sean Crocker said. “Our defense won us the game, we played with energy and effort to start the game, and while it went up and down a little bit, we just played hard!”

The Storm hosts the annual Stuff the Basket Tournament Friday, December 6, and Saturday, December 7. Mercersburg’s contests are Friday at 8 p.m. against Koa Prep (of North Bethesda, MD) and Saturday at 5 p.m. against the Phelps School (Malvern, PA). Attendees are asked to bring cash donations for Tuscarora Totes, which sends backpacks of food home weekly with children identified as "in need" by our local school district.
