Boys’ V Basketball Improves to 2-0 in MAPL
An explosive third quarter propelled Mercersburg’s boys’ varsity basketball team to its second Mid-Atlantic Prep League victory in as many days January 12 when the Blue Storm ran past the visiting Lawrenceville School, 58-47, in a contest played January 12 in the Plantz Courts of Nolde Gymnasium.
The Storm (9-4, 2-0 MAPL) led 15-13 after the first quarter and 32-26 at intermission. Three-pointers by Evan Howley ’22 and Patrick Di Tullio ’20 were key in Mercersburg opening up a 52-32 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. The visiting Big Red fought back, though, to go on a 15-0 run to cut into the lead, but a dunk from Quintin Metcalf ’20 and some clutch free throws by Tom Scheers ’21 allowed the Storm to hold on.
Di Tullio led Mercersburg with 17 points; Metcalf and AJ Gray ’20 contributed 11 points apiece. Lawrenceville’s Jacob Sussman led all scorers with 25 points.
Mercersburg, which had knocked off Hun just 24 hours earlier, completed a perfect MAPL weekend with the victory.
“Kaylen Oweh ’20 had a tough game on the offensive side, but really came through for us on the defensive end,” Mercersburg head coach Sean Crocker said. “We showed great poise and focus this weekend in holding both teams [Hun and Lawrenceville] to under 50 points. We need to build on that moving forward.
Mercersburg visits local rival St. James School Wednesday, January 15. Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m. in Hagerstown, MD.
