Mercersburg’s boys’ golf team tied for first at the prestigious Freeman Memorial, which was held April 30 at Bear Trap Dunes in Ocean View, DE (just west of Bethany Beach). The high-powered four-team field also featured Landon School (Bethesda, MD), St. Albans School (Washington, DC), and St. Paul's School (Timonium, MD).

The Blue Storm compiled a team score of 383 to tie with Landon and finish ahead of St. Paul’s (388), and St. Albans (398). Josh Pethel ’22 shot under par for the second straight tournament, this time firing a 70 to earn medalist honors as the lowest score in a field that featured multiple future college players at the NCAA DI and DIII levels.

Argyle Downes ’23 shot an even-par 72 to tie for third overall, and co-captain Kenneth Yonke ’22 rebounded for a difficult last outing to post a tremendous 75 for the Blue Storm. Nick Barnes ’22 showed a steely determination by carding a very important 81, and Jason Jones ’24 remained a solid contributor and came in with an 85.

"This is the lowest five-score total I’ve witnessed with a Mercersburg team," said Blue storm head coach Doug Smith. "Our top three posted a combined +1 on the day, which is truly outstanding. Josh is firing on all cylinders right now and brimming with confidence. It’s great to see, but competition at this level requires play from all parts of your team and we showed our depth today. Nick—from the sixth spot in the lineup—was able to pick up the back end of the squad and really gave us the score we needed to catch Landon. This was the type of event we love as a team, and I’m thrilled with the way we performed."

The Storm will now prep for the Mid-Atlantic Prep League Boys’ Golf Tournament, which will be held Wednesday, May 4, at the Peddie School in Hightstown, NJ. The first groups tee off at noon.
