Boys’ Golf Ties 9-Hole Record
On the first truly gorgeous spring day of the season, Mercersburg’s boys’ golf team tied the nine-hole school record in relation to par by shooting a combined 147 in a win over Randolph-Macon Academy (203) at Shenandoah Valley Country Club in Front Royal, VA.
The Blue Storm’s top four scorers combined for 7-over-par on the par-35 White Nine to equal the 7-over 151 posted last October at Chambersburg Country Club (a par-36 over nine holes).
Argyle Downes ’23 continued his stunning play with a round that featured two eagles on the way to a 1-under 34. Co-captain Kenneth Yonke ’22, who is in the midst of the best stretch of golf of his Mercersburg career, carded a tidy even-par 35. Coming in right behind were Josh Pethel ’22 and Jason Jones ’24, who each posted 39s to round out the scoring. Showcasing the team’s depth, the team tossed out rock-solid scores of 40 by Ethan Xin ’23 and co-captain Khoi Pham ’22.
"Having the entire competing team shoot 40 or below is a first for me," beamed Mercersburg head coach Doug Smith. "The depth of the squad is truly a blessing for the team. We are hitting on all cylinders right now, and that is good because we have two of our most challenging matches of the year next week. We need to stay focused and continue to improve day in and day out."
