Mercersburg’s boys’ golf team took on the two top-ranked teams in the Virginia Independent Schools rankings in a tri-match April 19 at Salisbury Country Club in Midlothian, VA (near Richmond). Host Trinity Episcopal School of Richmond posted a 147 to win the event, with Woodberry Forest carding a 149 and the Blue Storm 160.

Temperatures in the low 50s and blustery winds made for a stern day on an excellent course against top-level competition. But Argyle Downes '24 continued his excellent play with an even-par 36, showing that his game is clicking on all cylinders and in all conditions.

Co-captain Kenneth Yonke '22 was next in the scoring for the Blue Storm with a 38, extending his best stretch of golf over his four years on the team.  Ethan Xin '23 carded a truly rock-solid 42, while co-captain Khoi Pham '22 rounded out the scoring with a 44 on the day.

"This was a tremendous match to be invited to, and we are grateful to Trinity for accommodating us," Mercersburg head coach Doug Smith said. "This level of golf is very hard to find at the high-school level, and when the team is clicking, we can compete with this talent. Unfortunately, we did not collectively bring it today, and the moment got away from us. We have several difficult matches ahead of us and we need to use this as motivation to improve.”

The Blue Storm heads to Hightstown, NJ, to take part in the Swing for the Cure event Saturday, April 23, at the Peddie Golf Course (1:30 p.m.)
