Boys’ Golf Downs Episcopal in Spring Opener
After a fall season where Mercersburg’s boys’ golf team went unbeaten in head-to-head matches and finished second at the PAISAA Championships, the Blue Storm picked up right where it left off at the start of its spring slate by knocking off visiting Episcopal High School, 154-185, in a nine-hole match played on a cold and windy day at Chambersburg Country Club.
Mercersburg’s Argyle Downes ’23 was nearly perfect on the day with a sparkling bogey-free 34 (2-under par). Teammate Josh Pethel ’22 was right behind with a brilliant 35. Co-captain Kenneth Yonke ’22 began the spring with a rock-solid 39, and Ethan Xin ’23 shot 46 to round out the scoring for the Blue Storm.
"This was a difficult day to score with the elements in full effect, but our top golfers showed what they were made of," said Mercersburg head coach Doug Smith. "This is an excellent start the season and a wonderful primer to a schedule that is going to feature some extremely difficult matches. We have a stretch to really establish a practice routine now and prepare for the rest of the season."
Mercersburg hosts longtime rival The Hill School Saturday, April 9, beginning at 12:30 p.m. at Chambersburg Country Club.
