Caleb Newcomer ’23 scored two second-half touchdowns—one on a 38-yard rush and another on a 102-yard interception return—to lead the Blue Team to a 22–0 blanking of the White Team in the final contest in the 2020 Blue/White Football Series October 31.

The Blue scored 20 of its 22 points in the second half. A sack of White Team quarterback Jonas Hawk ’24 in the end zone by the Blue’s Louis Concordia ’22 resulted in a safety and a slim 2–0 halftime edge in the contest, which was played with two 24-minute halves with a running clock (except for the final two minutes of each half).

Newcomer scored the game’s first touchdown when he took a pitch from Blue quarterback Luke Golumbic ’22 and raced 38 yards around left end to increase the lead to 8–0. Jackson Schermerhorn ’21 (one of five Mercersburg seniors for whom the game was the final contest) broke several tackles on a 48-yard TD scamper with 9:55 left for a 14–0 lead, and as the White Team was driving for a score in the final seconds, Newcomer picked off a pass in the end zone and raced 102 yards for a touchdown. Schermerhorn’s two-point conversion run completed the scoring.

Schermerhorn was one of five seniors honored at halftime, joining Jake Ahlgren ’21, Adam Rappaport ’21, Mason Reed ’21, and Stephen Rice ’21.
