Beisty, Williams, Howley Lead Baseball to Another DH Sweep
Mercersburg’s varsity baseball team improved to 4-0 on the season by taking both games of a doubleheader at Episcopal High School April 24. The Blue Storm topped the Maroon by scores of 3–0 and 9–7 on the Episcopal campus in Alexandria, VA.
Owen Beisty ’21 struck out 14 hitters in a complete-game shutout in the opener. Beisty fanned 12 hitters in his Mercersburg debut last weekend in a victory over Hill; against the Maroon, he yielded just two hits and a walk in seven innings to earn the victory.
Evan Howley ’22 drove in two of Mercersburg’s three runs. Howley drew a bases-loaded walk to force home Caleb Newcomer ’23 in the 3rd inning, and singled in Max Awtry ’21 in the 7th inning. Gavin Williams ’24 added another insurance run for the Storm with a double that scored Beisty.
Mercersburg (4–0) fell behind 7–2 in the second game before clawing back to score the final seven runs of the contest. Four of those runs came in the 5th, when Aiden Lorson ’22, John Blanco ’24, and Beisty all hit run-scoring doubles to bring the Storm within 7–6. A bases-loaded balk in the 6th inning brought home Williams to tie the score at 7–7. In the 7th inning, Awtry scored the winning run when Beisty sacrificed and reached on an error, and then a double by Williams scored Beisty.
Howley was the winning pitcher in Game 2 after throwing five innings in relief of Mercersburg starting pitcher Jake Ahlgren ’21. He struck out 10 while allowing just one earned run.
The Storm’s next four games are against Virginia Episcopal School, beginning with a doubleheader next Saturday, May 1, in Lynchburg, VA. Mercersburg hosts a twin-bill against the Fighting Bishops May 8.
