Mercersburg’s varsity baseball team swiped both games of its season-opening doubleheader against Mid-Atlantic Prep League rival Hill April 17 in Pottstown, PA. The Blue Storm took the opener, 3–2, and outlasted the host Blues, 4–2, in the nightcap—making the official debut for Matt Jacobs as Mercersburg’s head coach a successful one.

In the first game, starting pitcher Owen Beisty ’21 struck out 12 Hill hitters while allowing just two hits and two runs (both unearned) in six innings of work. With the score tied 2–2 in the top of the 7th inning, Max Awtry ’21 drew a walk, Evan Howley ’22 singled, and Beisty was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jake Ahlgren ’21 then worked a walk which scored Awtry to put the Storm in front 3–2. Howley then worked a scoreless bottom of the 7th to preserve the win.

The second game also went Mercersburg’s way. The Storm jumped out to a 3–0 lead in support of starter (and eventual winning pitcher) Ahlgren, who allowed two hits over four innings. Howley earned the save with three scoreless innings of relief. Each of Mercersburg’s six hits in game 2 came from a different hitter—Beisty, Howley, John Blanco ’24, Julian Trilling ’21, Gavin Williams ’24, and Caleb Newcomer ’23.

Mercersburg pitchers did not allow an earned run in a combined 14 innings on the day.

“It was a really good performance by Beisty with a strong offensive showing in the first game, and we got solid pitching between Ahlgren and Howley in game 2, with the offense showing up later in the game to seal the win,” Jacobs said.

The Storm (2–0) visits Episcopal High School for a doubleheader next Saturday, April 24, in Alexandria, VA. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
