Baseball DH Sweep of Kiski Keeps Centennial Cup
Mercersburg’s baseball team won both games of a doubleheader against visiting Kiski May 14, with the victory in the first game clinching the yearlong Centennial Cup competition for the Blue Storm. Mercersburg defeated the Cougars, 14-3, in a five-inning contest shortened by the run rule, and then took a 12-2 win in the nightcap.
With the Centennial Cup standings tied 10-10, the winner of the first game of the doubleheader would claim the Cup. The Blue Storm made sure there wouldn't be much drama by scoring five runs in the 1st inning and then adding seven runs in the 3rd inning. Gavin Williams ’24 drove in four runs, while Caleb Newcomer ’23 scored three times and had two hits and two RBI. Evan Howley picked up the victory on the mound in a complete-game effort.
In the second game, Mercersburg put three runs on the board in the 1st inning and exploded for eight runs in the 6th. Williams, Newcomer, and Aiden Lorson ’22 each had two hits in the second game. Williams drove in three runs to give him seven RBI on the day. Newcomer, Austin Hallberg ’22, Augie Bennett ’24, and Arjun Patel ’23 had two RBI apiece. Hallberg was the winning pitcher, striking out seven in 5 2/3 innings of work without allowing an earned run.
The final results of the 2021-2022 Centennial Cup competion saw Mercersburg earn victories over the Cougars in cross country, golf, swimming, tennis, outdoor track & field, and baseball, while Kiski prevailed in soccer, basketball, wrestling, and lacrosse, and also received a point for football (since the Blue Storm does not field an 11-player team). Each victory is worth two points, giving Mercersburg a 12-10 overall win.
The Blue Storm now awaits its draw in the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association State Tournament.
