Baseball Beats Kiski Twice
Mercersburg’s baseball team improved to 9–0 with a road doubleheader sweep of host Kiski School May 15 in Saltsburg, PA. The Blue Storm pounded out a 14–6 victory in the opener, and completed the sweep with a 9–3 in the nightcap.
The Storm broke open a 1–1 tie by scoring four runs in the 3rd inning of the first game. John Blanco ’23 and Caleb Newcomer ’23 drew bases-loaded walks, and Aiden Lorson ’22 drove in Blanco and Owen Beisty ’21 with a two-out base hit. Mercersburg scored seven insurance runs in the top of the 7th to pull away. Lorson had three RBI and was one of three Storm hitters to collect a pair of base hits (joining Howley and Julian Trilling ’21).
Winning pitcher Evan Howley ’22 did not allow a hit in four innings of work, and struck out eight Kiski hitters—but also walked eight and allowed two earned runs. Jad Hassoun ’21 allowed three runs (all unearned) and Kiski’s lone hit of the ballgame in three innings of relief, striking out three. (The teams combined for 13 errors.)
In the second game, Mercersburg jumped out to a 5–0 lead and cruised to victory from there. Trilling collected three hits and Kade Venkatesan ’21 had two hits and drove in two runs. Jake Ahlgren ’21 earned the win on the mound.
Including a 13–3 win over Kiski May 8 in Mercersburg, the Blue Storm has outscored the Cougars, 36—12, in three games this season.
Mercersburg will try to complete an undefeated regular season Saturday, May 22, when it visits Sidwell Friends School for a twin-bill in Washington, D.C. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
