Boys Lacrosse
Mercersburg Academy is proud to usher in an exciting new chapter for boys lacrosse, under the leadership of Head Coach Rick Sowell, that combines seasoned leadership, year-round development, and top-tier facilities to position our student-athletes for success on and off the field. The boys varsity team recently won the 2025 Commonwealth Cup.
Year-Round Development and Fall Program
For athletes not competing in a fall sport, Mercersburg offers a structured fall lacrosse program—an uncommon advantage among peer schools. The program features:
- On-field training that mirrors spring-season practices, emphasizing skill development and lacrosse IQ.
- Strength and conditioning with weight training, speed, and agility work. Competitive play, including playdays, tournaments, and the October Sixes competition, providing valuable game experience ahead of spring.
Athletes retain the flexibility to compete with their club teams during fall tournaments. Running 10–12 weeks, the program delivers consistent, college-caliber preparation rarely matched by other prep schools.
Facilities Investment
In spring 2026, Mercersburg will break ground on a new, dedicated lacrosse field—an elite training and competition venue that underscores the school’s commitment to the future of the program.
Recruiting Advantage
With extensive connections across the NCAA coaching community, Head Coach Sowell ensures that Mercersburg athletes are seen, supported, and advocated for at the highest levels. His active involvement in club circuits and showcase events provides players with critical national exposure throughout the recruiting process.
A Complete Student-Athlete Experience
At Mercersburg, lacrosse is part of a larger journey. Our athletes pursue rigorous academics, live within a close-knit residential community, and compete in a high-performance athletic environment—preparing them not only for college, but for life.

COACHES AND ROSTER
Rick Sowell brings a wealth of experience, leadership, and vision to Mercersburg Academy as head boys varsity lacrosse coach. With over 25 years of coaching at the highest levels of collegiate and club lacrosse, Coach Sowell is recognized nationally as a transformational leader and program builder.
A former Division I head coach at prestigious programs including the United States Naval Academy, Stony Brook University, Dartmouth College, and St. John’s University, Coach Sowell has made history at nearly every stop. He is one of only three coaches in NCAA history to lead three different programs to the NCAA Tournament. His teams have produced All-Americans, conference champions, professional players, and most importantly, student-athletes of strong character and academic integrity.
In addition to his collegiate accomplishments, Coach Sowell served as an assistant coach for the 2010 U.S. Men’s National Team that captured the gold medal at the World Lacrosse Championship (Manchester, England). He is also known for developing well-rounded student-athletes by emphasizing fundamentals, personal growth, and a team-first mentality. His programs consistently reflect a culture built on accountability, discipline, and mutual respect, both on and off the field.
Coach Sowell is currently involved with nationally recognized club program, Sweetlax Lacrosse, and contributes to USA Lacrosse’s U-19, U-17, and U-15 national teams. A trusted mentor for student-athletes and families navigating the recruiting process, he regularly coaches and evaluates at top high school showcases across the country during the fall and summer seasons.
As he leads Mercersburg into a new era of boys lacrosse, Coach Sowell’s mission is clear: to build a competitive and principled program that helps players grow as athletes, scholars, and leaders.
