Area Charities Receive $11,000 from Mercersburg Academy
Mercersburg Academy is supporting four local charities with a donation of $11,000. The Maranatha Food Pantry, the Franklin County Homeless Shelter, and the Chambersburg Cold Weather Drop-In Shelter (all in Chambersburg, PA), and the Reach Overnight Shelter in Hagerstown, MD, are receiving $2,750 each that was raised during the school’s #MercersburgCares Challenge, which was held over six days in May.
Every gift of any amount to the Mercersburg Annual Fund during that time unlocked a donation to the four local charities.
Maggie Betkowski ’21, a member of Mercersburg’s rising senior class, presented the donations to Craig Newcomer of Maranatha Food Pantry and the Chambersburg Cold Weather Drop-In Shelter and Trudy Wesley of the Franklin County Homeless Shelter, and faculty member Jim Malone presented a check to Jeannie Asbury of the Reach Overnight Shelter.
“It is one of our key responsibilities to be an active partner in our local community—and it is hard to think of a more critical time than right now for us to reach out and offer our support to community organizations that provide life-sustaining services to our at-risk populations,” said Quentin McDowell, Mercersburg’s associate head of school for external relations. “We are grateful for the selfless work of the Maranatha Food Pantry, the Franklin County Homeless Shelter, the Chambersburg Cold Weather Drop-In Shelter, and the Reach Overnight Shelter as they endeavor to serve the needs of so many of our neighbors, particularly in light of the immense impact of recent events in our country and our world.”
