Global Programs

What you need to know about GOING GLOBAL with Mercersburg:

Each travel program at Mercersburg is coordinated by experienced faculty members who are employed by the school. Throughout the planning and execution of each program, faculty members are supported by the Office of Global Programs and Initiatives at Mercersburg, as well as by many other coordinating departments. We maintain an 8 to 1 student to faculty ratio for both safety and immersion reasons, and we attempt to have a female and a male leader on each program. Prior to departure, both students and faculty are given extensive information about the safety protocols and expectations that all participants should have while part of a school travel program.

Travel Immunizations
For all travel programs it is the participant’s and the participant’s parent/guardian’s responsibility to make sure that all required or suggest travel immunizations are received prior to the departure of the trip. Trip leaders may send reminders to students and parents, but we strongly encourage participants to visit their doctor or local travel clinic while they are home on breaks to receive the appropriate immunizations and medications.

Travel Visas/Documents
For all travel programs it is the participant’s and the participant’s parent/guardian’s responsibility to obtain necessary visas and other travel documents required to enter the selected country of travel prior to departing for the trip. The student and parent/guardians are responsible for completing all applications and fees associated with visas or other travel documents. The websites or can be helpful tools in determining whether or not students will need a travel visa.

Trip Cancellations/Insurance
Trip cancellations create issues because many of the necessary expenditures for the program are currently being made and these investments are non-refundable. Should a family cancel; the only option available would be to find another student to take their student’s place. This is obviously less likely as the trip draws closer.

Mercersburg does not offer trip cancellation insurance, but we urge families to investigate this option.  One option is AIG’s Travel Guard: Please note that Mercersburg Academy does not endorse any specific company nor may we assist in any transactions families may have with these companies.

Any student participating in this program is expected to have appropriate health/medical insurance.  Families should check with their insurance provider to confirm coverage during international travel.

Behavior Expectations
We are confident that our group will be exemplary, however students and their families should understand that this is a school trip and that the expectations of students at Mercersburg Academy apply. On a combined travel, academic, and exchange trip good behavior is crucial to everyone’s enjoyment and safety. Any violation of local laws, intoxication, or unwillingness to cooperate fully with trip leaders, authorized personnel, or authorities may result in an immediate return home at the family’s expense and disciplinary consequences at school.
