  • Classrooms

Different disciplines are sometimes taught best in different ways and in different settings. Mercersburg offers students a variety of learning environments:

In English, history and religion courses, most classes use a Harkness table, a large oval table that symbolizes equality between all participants, and facilitate discussion and the sharing of ideas. At a Harkness table, no one is the leader; Harkness tables encourage cooperation and collaboration.

  • Art & Music

The Burgin Center for the Arts is the home of classes in fine arts. These studio classrooms provide unique spaces for the study of drawing and painting, digital arts, ceramics and sculpture, dance, theatre, and choral and instrumental music.

Student fine-arts work is displayed on stage in the 600-seat Simon Theatre or the black-box-style Hale Studio Theatre, or exhibited in the Cofrin & Niche Galleries in the Burgin Center or the Sheridan Gallery in Irvine Hall.
  • Computer Labs

Some concepts are best taught using software. Because students have to use software to engage with all the concepts in the course, a few courses are taught exclusively in one of the four dedicated computer labs on campus. These courses include Computer Art, Digital Video, and Making Music for Today’s World in the Burgin Center, as well as Robotics and Computer Science in Irvine Hall.

  • Lenfest Library

The Academy Library is housed in the Lenfest Hall Learning Center. The library is able to support both the academic and recreational needs of the community at large by housing more than 45,000 volumes, over 100 subscriptions to newspapers, magazines, and journals, over two dozen Online Databases, and maintaining a core collection of over 2,000 DVDs, CDs and other media. The librarians supply students, faculty and staff with timely, important information while encouraging them to become independent learners. Through bibliographic instruction and close work with students and faculty, the library's goal of integrating modern research methods into the classroom remains a top priority.
  • Science Labs

If you just tell a science student something, it might not be remembered; if you show students something, they might remember; if you let them work with something, they will remember.

The seven science classrooms at Mercersburg have two areas: a discussion area and a lab area. The lab area has lab tables, fume hoods, sinks, and equipment with which to collect data. The discussion area has tables and chairs and complete audio-visual equipment.
