College Counseling

The college search is an educational process: a journey of self-discovery full of challenges, rewards, and responsibilities. During your time at Mercersburg, you'll work with your parents and counselors to decide which college or university is the best fit for you.
College preparation at Mercersburg happens both inside and outside the classroom—starting on day one.

Grades 9 and 10 (Junior and Lower-Middler Years)
Mercersburg's college counselors will offer advice and help you get the most from the school's valuable academic resources.

Lower-middlers will take the PSAT and then meet in small groups with a college counselor to go over the results.

Grade 11 (Upper-Middler Year): Fall Semester
You'll sit for the PSAT, the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program.

This is also a time when you and your college counselor will discuss your interests and goals in order to develop a college exploration list. You'll discuss your list with your parents and plan visits to colleges during the spring and summer before senior year.

You'll also have the opportunity to meet with admission officers from more than 70 colleges and universities who visit the Mercersburg campus each year.

Grade 11 (Upper-Middler Year): Spring Semester
If the SAT I or SAT II are recommended or required by the colleges or universities you're applying to, you'll sit for them at this point.

This is also the time to meet regularly with your college counselor to discuss the progress you’ve made in your search; courses for your senior year; and summer activities such as jobs, volunteer work, academic programs, or more college visits.

Grade 12 (Senior Year)
Your senior year is an exciting time to finalize the balanced list of colleges to which you plan to apply. You'll focus on college essays and applications—and keep working hard in all your courses to complete your preparation for college.
