Academic Support

The Writing Center and Other Help Centers

Mercersburg has numerous subject-specific help centers that are invaluable academic resources for students.

The Writing Center

The Writing Center (Irvine Hall Room 316) is a wonderful resource available to all who are interested in developing their writing skills. Students can improve their writing, regardless of their level of development, by working with student Fellows or Writing Center faculty in individual sessions. Faculty have a resource that enables them to supplement their classroom writing instruction through student referrals, requests for in-class workshops led by Fellows, and dialogues with staff members.

Directed by faculty member Michele Poacelli, the Writing Center is located on the third floor of Irvine Hall. There are computer stations and printers available, and a resource library for issues in writing, documentation and publishing. There are comfortable chairs and a coffee table for relaxing with journals and books. The Writing Center offers a friendly, inviting space, where writers can sit down to explore the challenges and pleasures of language and learning.

Daytime: HELP periods and free rotations
Evenings: Sunday: 7:15 to 9:30 p.m.

The Math and Science Center

Located in Irvine Hall Room 406, the Math and Science Center is the go-to place when a math homework assignment proves more difficult than you thought or you simply need a little review of “why” and “how” to get you over your hump. A member of the math or science faculty is always on duty, in addition to students who have very strong math skills.

Monday through Thursday, 7:15 - 9:30 p.m.

Language Media Center

The Language Media Center (Irvine Hall Room 303) features a large-screen television with a satellite feed providing access to more than 60 channels in the world languages taught at Mercersburg (Chinese, French, German, and Spanish).

International DVD players and VCRs allow the viewing of media in most of the world’s standard formats.

The LMC also hosts 17 networked computer workstations, which provide students with access to the Internet and foreign-language websites. Students also record responses to teacher-provided content.

In addition, learners seek help from student "ambassadors," sometimes native speakers, who are trained to provide support and oral practice outside the dorm.  This allows teachers to track student attendance and provide credit for frequency of help.

A large SMART Board allows for the interactive use of content, with the results being captured from the screen and saved for future use.

Daytime: during HELP sessions with individual faculty
Evenings: Monday, 7:15 - 9:25 p.m.; Wednesday, 7:15 - 9:45 p.m.
