Study Options

Mercersburg makes studying a top priority, and we also make it reasonably easy for every student to do the same.

Study Halls

Ninth Grade
Ninth graders often have the least developed study skills. This comes as no surprise, given that they are the youngest students. At Mercersburg every ninth-grade boarding student must attend a structured, faculty-supervised study hall in Irvine Hall Sunday through Thursday evenings during the fall term. Evening study options continue for the winter and spring terms depending on a student’s classroom performance; students who qualify may choose to study in the evening in their dormitories or another space.

10th through 12th Grades
Students in the 10th grade and higher always have the quiet and comfortable Lenfest Library available to them, in addition to a formal, faculty-supervised study sanctuary Sunday through Thursday evenings.

Plenty of time to study

Every student’s schedule will undoubtedly be full, but as packed as it might seem, everyone can find time to study.

Free periods: Most students have at least one free rotation per day when no classes are scheduled. This is a perfect time to study.

Every evening after dinner: This is prime study time. Ninth graders begin the year with mandatory study hall on weeknights in Irvine Hall. Students in grades 10, 11, and 12 have the option every evening of using the library or the nightly study sanctuary; they may also study in their dormitory rooms or in other spaces inside the dorm.

Weekends: While weekends are meant for relaxation and other activities, they do provide ample time for study as well. Weekends are a particularly good time for reading, writing papers, and doing general research.

Help Centers

If you’re studying in the evenings and find that you need help with a particular assignment or project, there are specialized help centers where you can go for immediate assistance. Most are open several nights during the week.
