Oh, the places you'll go!

“If you meet someone who went to Mercersburg, you already have something in common; you share something special, you know?” Julia Wiedemann (‘98) was absolutely right as she thought out loud to the group of Mercersburg students - current and recently graduated - in the green room of Embassy Row in Manhattan. Seven of us were given the opportunity to represent Mercersburg in front of the cameras housed in the small studio on Hudson and Vandam. Mrs. Sullivan invited me on the trip to talk about Model UN and my plans for the coming years as we taped video for new admission materials.

Conversation was the focus of the two days in the city. Both on and off camera, the seven of us (members of the Classes of 2007, 2008, 2010) talked about everything. However close we were during our year(s) on campus, we came to Manhattan ready to praise, criticize, reminisce, advise, and celebrate openly with one another and with the alumni involved. Isaac Brody ('99) and Julia Wiedemann ('98) were like classmates we just hadn't seen in a few years. They recognized many of the names of faculty and appreciated all of our stories.
At the two dinners we were all genuinely interested in one another’s plans, work, and opinions as we discussed everything from my post-graduate year to the upcoming presidential election. And as the seven of us sat in the green room of Embassy Row, we shared stories, laughed, and talked like the best of friends.
Sam, the other member of the Class of 2007 on the trip, was all ears as I talked about my preparations for the coming year at Oswestry School in England, and I was equally interested as he described the entryway at Yale in which he is set to live come September. Maggie (‘10) talked about our time in New York back in May as representatives of the United States to the annual Model UN conference there and about the new organization she is planning to start on campus this year.
Lorraine (‘10) spoke with me about her experience at NYLC (a conference in Washington I attended just a few years ago). And Sarah wanted to know everything I could tell her about getting into Columbia, hoping to spend four years in the Big Apple at what will be my home come next fall.
From Central Park to Embassy Row, from the University Club (where we stayed) to our dinners at Hangawi and Kin Khao, the members of the Mercersburg community shared a great few days, for which we have only our alma mater to thank. And this recently-graduated student learned to appreciate, just a little bit more, the unique experience he enjoyed at Mercersburg and what it means for my life off-campus and on my way to whatever places I may go.
