Women's Lacrosse, Southern Style (Part 4)

A sleepy group of girls met outside for the last official “practice” of the 2008 Women’s Lacrosse Trip in Hilton Head, South Carolina, yesterday morning. After a lot of stretching to loosen up some very stiff legs, the team went on a 30-minute run through Harbour Town, saying a joyful “good morning” to every single person we met.

After the run, everyone went back to their villas to do some last-minute cleaning, packing, and showering. Needless to say, the inspection lady was very impressed. We left the villas looking better than when we arrived, and all of our $100 keys were returned.

We started the long van ride back Mercersburg at 10:17 a.m. Everyone fell asleep and woke up in Columbia, South Carolina, where we met up with Chase to look at the USC campus. After a delicious lunch near the college, we walked around a bit and everyone was extremely entertained by the fountain, where Oakley gave us a lesson about high-pressure streams.

After a final goodbye to Chase, we were on the road again. With Sheaffer’s van buzzing with Chase’s newly made CDs, we drove to Davidson, North Carolina, where we met up with the Bacchuses (Annie Birney’s friends), who provided us with very refreshing pizza and cookies. Beloved team dad Marty Irving happily met us there and drove with us to Davidson College. There we watched an intense match between Davidson and Vermont, and also saw Elliott Van Ness ’05, who was pretty surprised to see a bunch of Mercersburg sweatshirts. This leads me to an important point—everywhere we go (gas stations, Wal-Marts, playgrounds, or games), there are always one or two people who know or sent children or relatives to Mercersburg. The Mercersburg family really does extend all over!

Last night was our last night together, and as extremely fun as this trip was, everyone is sore, tired, and ready to get home. There are so many great pictures, memories, and jokes that won’t be forgotten for a long time. The chemistry between the team is already really strong, and this season is sure to be an excellent one.

Look for the final conclusion blog by Sheaffer Reese and this blogger, coming soon!

Signing off from Room 324 in a Microtel in Statesville, North Carolina, I hope you are having a great Friday!
