That time of the year....

When it becomes hard to concentrate, and everything seems to happen at once. It usually starts with my birthday in early may, and ends with the last day of school. At this time, all the students await the end of the year. Everybody is unusually jittery and impatient. The days go by slow but the weeks go by fast, and before you know it its exam week. Teachers seem to give you more quizzes and tests than normal. Then there is the "end of the year syndrome" that seems to occur every year around the same time. Subconsciously, your grades start going down. Your mind is on other things. Students have less patience and tolerance towards each other simply because we have been together for a whole school year already.

However, despite these things, the end of the year is a busy and fun time. The first big storm of the spring (which happened yesterday) had a lot of people outside mudsliding and playing in the rain. The last days of spring sports bring fun activities like cookouts and "field day" practices. For me, my first two goals of the lacrosse season this week were very exciting! Around this time of the year, returning students also select their roommate and dorm for next year. Next year's student council for each grade is voted on, and students start packing their belongings, readying themselves to go home.

As for me, I'm enjoying my last few weeks at the Burg, but I'm definitely looking forward to this summer! ;)

A Little Handy Work

Last night, I had finished most of my homework, so I went to the common room to catch up with my advisor.  He was my Spanish teacher last year and I came to really enjoy the language.  Whenever we speak, it's usually in Spanish.  He started to complain about a bunch of the broken or damaged pieces of furniture in the common room and I suddenly got the idea that we could them, since we weren't doing anything else.  I ran to my room, grabbed my tool kit and screwdriver, and ran back to the common room and soon we started to dissect the furnature and started to fix them.  When I was in middle school, I worked with a handyman/carpenter several times a week and I've always loved to work with my hands, but being at bording school, there just aren't many opportunities to fix or build things.  It felt good to work on the furnature last night; it's relaxing and soothing to me whenever I work with my hands and it is also nice that there are now some chairs and sofas that can actually hold someone.  Now I need to think of some other project that I can work on...now that I've dusted off my skills, I'm craving to do something.  Look out, Mercersburg!

Kalamazoo!

"...I've got a gal, in Kalamazoo..."

When I first started looking at Colleges, my mother sang that song to me (off of my brother's Glenn Miller Orchestra CD), and jeered that she'd never send me to a school named "Kalamazoo".   A year later, she sent a deposit for the Fall of 2007 to Kalamazoo College, Michigan.

I'd never been to Michigan before Thursday, two weeks ago, but after spending a day with students and faculty, I realized that my college woes were over, and I could safely choose Kzoo.  The school is not very well known, apart from those in the Midwest, but the students there are academically focused (the classroom buildings were buzzing with activity), they liked to be outside (they were playing Ultimate Frisbee on the quad), they liked to study abroad (nearly 90% of students studied abroad their junior year-my tour guide just arrived from China), and everyone in the Midwest is just so darn friendly.  I felt like I finally found my happy-people; everyone waved and sparked jovial conversations about the weather, our funny rental car, or the best place in town to eat a cheesecake.

Perhaps my college search was not too specific, all I truly needed in the end was a friendly group of people that liked to study, play Ultimate, and go abroad (and know a thing or two about cheesecake).
