Baseball Standout Heine Named Second-Team All-America
Cord Heine '07, Mercersburg's single-season home run leader and a member of two Blue Storm state-champion baseball teams, earned second-team All-America honors from the Baseball Coaches Association of America.
Heine, an outfielder who will continue his career at the University of Massachusetts next year, hit .575 in just 26 games with 13 home runs and 51 runs batted in while helping lead Mercersburg to its second Pennsylvania Independent School State Championship in three years. He also posted 46 hits, 14 doubles, and three triples, and broke the single-season home run mark held by Josh Edgin '06, who plays at Ohio State University.
"Cord had an outstanding year for us," Mercersburg head coach Karl Reisner said. "His offensive numbers were unbelievable, given the schedule we played. Baseball is a team game, but Cord really put the team on his back and carried us to a state championship this year. I look for him to be very successful at the college level."
Heine was also named to the BCAA's first-team All-District II squad, which represents Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. He earned a spot on the All-Mid-Atlantic Prep League (MAPL) first team, and garnered area Player of the Year honors from the Hagerstown Herald-Mail.
The national honor recognizes Heine, of Malvern, Pennsylvania, as one of the nation's top six high-school outfielders. He was a member of Mercersburg's MAPL-champion and Pennsylvania state-championship teams in 2005 and 2007.
