Williams Garners National Swimming Award
Pete Williams, Mercersburg’s head swimming and diving coach and a faculty member since 1988, is a 2007 winner of the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association’s Outstanding Service Award.
Williams, a member of the 1968 U.S. Olympic Team, 11-time NCAA All-American at Michigan State University, and former AAU national champion in the 400-meter individual medley, enters his 20th year at Mercersburg in the fall. His teams have won four Eastern Interscholastic Swimming Championships and broken several national prep school records.
“The greatest compliment a person can receive is being recognized by one's peers,” Mercersburg Director of Athletics Ron Simar says. “Pete is that rare individual who has the respect of everyone he has contact with—his swimmers, his swim coaching and faculty coaching colleagues, and so on.
“Pete is recognized internationally as an expert coach. He is a true professional and has worked steadily for many years in his quiet manner to earn this much-deserved recognition. I have a great deal of appreciation for the integrity that Pete brings to the Mercersburg swim program.”
Williams has coached numerous Olympians, and has served as coach for the U.S. Olympic Modern Pentathlon Team, as well as working at the Goodwill Games and World Championships. He is a past-president of the Texas Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association, and runs United Swim Clinics with his Mercersburg predecessor, John Trembley, who is head swimming coach at the University of Tennessee.
