State Champs Again: Baseball Takes Title
Mercersburg claimed its second Pennsylvania Independent School State Championship in three years, and its fourth since 1999, with a 12–2 title-game victory over Chestnut Hill Academy May 26.
The Blue Storm exploded for 43 runs in its four tournament games, and knocked off Germantown Academy, 12–9, in the event's semifinals (just before the championship game). As the No. 7 seed in the tournament, Mercersburg defeated the top three seeds en route to the crown.
"This team peaked at the opportune moment," Blue Storm Head Coach Karl Reisner said. "It was an absolute joy to be a part of this team."
Ryan Colby ’07 was the winning pitcher against Germantown Academy. It was his 21st career victory and ran his season record to 8–1. The Blue Storm (18–11) pounded out 18 hits in support of Colby and starter Dave O’Brien ’08.
The championship game featured a nine-run Mercersburg fourth inning that included home runs by Kenny Burns ’07 (a grand slam), Drew Crofton ’07, and Cord Heine ’07, who broke the school’s single-season record with his 13th homer of the year. Crofton tossed a five-hit complete game on the mound in the final.
Mercersburg’s recent run of baseball success also includes state titles in 1999, 2002, and 2005.
