Squash Team Goes for the Kill

The spotlight was on faculty member and varsity men’s squash coach Chip Vink on Tuesday, January 30. Squash Coach Chip VinkChannel 25, NBC reporter Karen Loftus was at the Davenport Squash Center to interview Vink and some of his players about their impressive 15-1 record and what it’s like to play in a state-of-the-art facility. “We’re only halfway through the season with a lot of challenges ahead of us,” explained Vink, “but the players are playing exceptionally well.”

Highlights of the season so far include beating Mid-Atlantic Prep League contenders Blair (7-0) and Hill (6-1), in addition to a strong win against Navy’s JV (6-3).

Thrusting the team forward are #1, and nationally ranked player, Valentin Quan ’08, #2 Scott Nehrbas ’07, and #3 Allan Lutz ’07.

Vink discussed the benefits of playing in Mercersburg’s squash center—“This is one of the best facilities at the high school or college level. With 10 courts, everyone can play an hour every day, which is unusiual,” he said.

“Squash is a very physically demanding and one of the best aerobic sports you can play. My aim is to make viable squash players who can go on to compete at the college level.”

As a 16-year veteran squash coach, Vink said, If there were more courts at schools around the nation, I believe squash would be as popular as soccer.”
